About us
10th April 2010
Welcome to the world of fabulous Thai cuisine. This is a place where we can share a passion for Thai cooking, exchange ideas and ask questions about Thai food.
Thai cuisine is the art of blending flavours to create dishes that are well balanced using ingredients that are available locally. It is about sharing and building a community. We share food with our neighbours, welcome our guests with whatever we have in the kitchen, offer food to monks (tak-bat), cooking together in the community in local events and so on. It is an spiritual experience that we would like to share with you.
At Red Ginger Thai Gourmet Group, we offer an authentic Thai Cuisine experience and building community of Thai food lovers, right here in the wonderful city of Victoria!
About Natthakarn(Nat) Johnstone
I am a proud citizen of Thailand and was born and raised in Bangkok. I grew up in a fairly big family. My mom always been around making sure that we are well looked after. My dad spent most of his time aboard working and sending money home. I have 3 younger sisters whom I love dearly. I am married to a Canadian man and have a wonderful daughter who is now 7 years old. I moved to Victoria 7 years ago. Leaving my family, friends and careers is a very difficult thing to do but I had to get my priority straight and believe that Victoria might be more suitable to raise a family so here I am. My love with foods started since I was very young. My mom loves to cook even though she would not admit it if she was asked. She always spends time in the kitchen as long as I can remember. And being the oldest daughter, I am expected to help. I started to help my mom in the kitchen at a very young age. It was certainly not a voluntary thing but either that or getting spanked. However, if I stop thinking about the cartoon and the show that my sisters are watching, I found myself actually enjoy prepare foods and learn to cook them.
The first dish that I learn to cook is Thai omlet. I think just about everybody people in Thailand know how to cook it. In my teenager life, my mom starts to teach me more dishes and sometimes I get to cook for my dad when he is home late from work. My passion for cooking started to immerge more and more everyday. I have a few experience of cooking business at various activities in high school as well as in college. Now, I am using this skill not only to raise a family but to also share the love of Thai foods with you. Thank you to my dear mom for being an inspiration and a good role model to me and the sisters. Thank you for not giving up on me and always provide good opportunity in our lives. I can’t certainly be who I am today without her support and encouragement. She has shared with me her gift of cooking and it wouldn’t be fair to just keep it to myself. I would like to share this gift and the love of Thai cooking with you and I hope you will share it with your love ones as well.”
Cheers,
Natthakarn (Nat) Johnstone
